My kids love rocks. Maybe all kids do. When Big Boy was just a tiny boy, we would go for walks on the Monon a lot. Every single time he would insist upon getting out of the stroller and finding a rock on the side of the trail. The rock then had to go home with us, where we added it to the “collection” on the kitchen counter (why they had to be on the kitchen counter, I will never know). We made it through a few years without adding to the collection. I think he figured out that they all looked the same. Then one day someone at co-op was giving away a bag of rocks with a book identifying all the different types. Oh boy. This reignited Big Boy’s love of rocks, and introduced Little Man to a whole world he didn’t know existed. Since then we cannot get through a museum gift shop without checking out the rocks available for sale.
This weekend will quite possibly be a dream come true for my children. The Indiana State Museum will host their annual GeoFest this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. For once my children will not be limited to novelty rocks sold in gift shops! They will have experts and vendors set up with all things geological. Not just rocks, but fossils and minerals will be on display as well. Kids (and adults) will have the opportunity to ask questions from experts, play geology games, purchase geology-related goodies, and maybe even win a prize!
GeoFest is included with regular museum admission and takes place during regular museum hours (10 – 5 Friday and Saturday, 11 – 5 Sunday).
