A hidden gem in Indianapolis is the Indiana Historical Society. This is a low-cost museum filled with interesting things to see and do. I love it all year round, but this holiday season is especially fun. Not only do they have their recreation of the living room from A Christmas Story (it’s an annual tradition for me to whine and beg my children to dress up in the bunny costumes, and my Big Boy to look at me like I’ve lost my mind), but this year they are hosting the Festival of Trees. There are 25 Christmas trees sponsored by local businesses and decorated in fascinating themes. They are set up throughout the History Center, so take a tour of the whole place and vote for your three favorites. My kids absolutely LOVED the Pop Weaver’s popcorn-themed tree. While you’re there, check out the family history station where you can look up your ancestors on their computers and the Indiana Experience, where you walk into various points in Indiana history. Also, I noticed a sign on the desk saying that during the Festival of Tress (from now until January 3), new household memberships (normally $75) are half price! Visit on the weekends to enjoy extras like film screenings, crafts, and face painting. Also, admission will be free on December 20!
Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for kids & take your parking ticket in to have it validated for free parking. They are open Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 – 5:00, Sundays through the season noon – 5:00.
