It’s that time again! One of my Big Boy’s favorite days is homeschool day at the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton, OH. This FREE day at the museum is full of fun activities and lots of big planes.
There is so much going on, it’s hard to summarize it all, but here’s some basics:
Admission to the museum is free. You can wander on your own as long as you want in the galleries. It’s open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
For the preschool set (age 3-5) there are storytimes at 9:30, 11:15, and 1:15. Seating is limited and an adult must stay with the kiddo. This takes place in the Early Years gallery next to the 1909 Wright Flyer.
Guided tours are available at 10:15 or 1:30. They begin at Kettering Hall and are appropriate for all ages.
You can pick up a scavenger hunt to make wandering through the galleries more interactive. There are different hunts available for all ages from 5-18. These are available at the entrance to the Early Years Gallery anytime from 9-4.
Many different activities will take place in the center of the museum’s second building anytime from 9-4. There will be stations that include hands-on activities and demos. (This is Little Man’s favorite part.)
There are four different auditorium-style presentations at 9:45, 11:00, 1:15, and 2:45. These are located in Carney Auditorium. Seating is limited and first come, first serve. Doors open no earlier than 15 minutes before the program. They’re open to everyone but geared towards middle school and up.
Now here’s the big one, so pay attention: There are four hands-on classes located in the Learning Center. These programs are for the student only (no parents or siblings attend). Line numbers for these classes are distributed on a first come, first serve basis at 9:00 in Kettering Hall. These classes fill up very, very fast! If you want to be in a class, be there by 9:00 to get your line number. Classes are at 9:30 (grades 1-3), 10:45 (grades 4-6), 1:00 (grades 6-8), and 2:30 (grades 9-12).
