Thursdays: Homeschool Day at Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site

Ben Harrison House classesThe third Thursday of every month is Home School Day at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. Every month a different theme will be explored. The cost is only $4 per student and for that you get about an hour long class plus a partial tour of the house. The class starts at 1:30 and runs until about 3:00.

Themes are:

November—Native Americans…(November 19th)
December—Twas the Night Before Christmas…(December 5th — this is a Saturday program)
February—A Pledge is a Promise…(February 18th)
March—Settlers and Surveyors…(March 17th)
April—The Signing…(April 21st)
May—Coming to America…(May 19th)

You can find all the information and register here.

The education director at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site is AWESOME. He will tailer the lesson to the ages of the kids that sign up. I’d say any elementary grades will be engaged and entertained by the classes, maybe even up to sixth or seventh grade. Also, I know how intimidating it can be to take young kids into a historic home. I was nervous the first time we went and my youngest was about five at the time, so I can only imagine how you’re feeling about a two year old. I promise you, the staff and volunteers at this house are cool. You are able to walk through many of the rooms and there are even some things you are able to touch. Obviously there are going to be things the kids can’t touch, but this place welcomes children and knows how to deal with them.

We took part in the classes that were offered last year and we all really enjoyed them. Now, the class won’t run without a minimum number of students registered, so be sure to sign up ASAP and tell all your friends to go too. I’d really love to see them all run this year!
